Bayer Leverkusen thump 10-man Union Berlin to climb top of Bundesliga

Leverkusen win 4-0 at home to equal Bayern Munich's record consecutive victories

Union Berlin had Jerome Roussillon sent off in the first half as their winless run extended to three games

Nathan Tella opened the scoring in just the third minute with a clinical finish from a Florian Wirtz pass, before the latter doubled Leverkusen's lead with a penalty just ten minutes later. Roussillon then received a straight red card in the 32nd minute for a rash challenge on Exequiel Palacios to give Leverkusen full control of the contest. Wirtz continued to impress and made it 3-0 just after the hour mark, before Amine Adli added a fourth late on to also ensure Bayer Leverkusen equal Bayern Munich's record for consecutive Bundesliga wins at eight. The result sees Xabi Alonso's team move to the top of the Bundesliga, a point ahead of Bayern, who are in action against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday. Union Berlin, meanwhile, remain eighth, five points adrift of the top four.
